This is why I absolutely love making my own decorations. I urge you to ditch the plastic store bought ornaments and to opt for something homemade. When I say homemade, I literally mean made at home in your very own kitchen. Yes, natural and food based decorations not only look adorable and festive, but rather than being stored in a box in your attic you can consume these knick-knacks when they’re done being seen! You can make everything from edible gingerbread people to painted eggshells or even dried fruit. The goal is to be creative and to create unique pieces that hold meaning for you simply because you took the time to craft them with loved ones or even on your own. It also doesn’t hurt when you can eat some of these pretty pieces too! The next time that you’re cooking up a batch of holiday cookies, add a dozen or so extra for decorating. Brushing cookies with egg glaze before baking makes them shiny and festive. Tie a piece of twine around the stem of an apple. When youre making popcorn balls, insert a piece of string into your handful of popcorn mix before you mold it into a ball shape. You can even insert a string of dried red peppers and garlic together with a needle and thread, and use star anise or cinnamon sticks in creative ways. Once dried, use a needle to thread a string or piece of ribbon through the edge of each slice. You can do the same thing with starfruit, which naturally slice into the shape of a star. Slice those to expose their star-shaped outline, dry them as you would the apple slices, and string them up. After the holidays you can eat your apple and starfruit slices, chop them up into cereal, or even soak them in water (or liquor) to bake into treats. Create ¼-inch horizontal slices through the fruit and dry your rounds as you would the aforementioned apple slices. For variety, stud the peel with whole cloves first, and cut your slices a little thicker. Thread a string through one edge of each round and hang. Once the holidays are over, eat the slices, use them to flavor dishes, add them to baked goods, cook them with a bit of honey to make marmalade, or just simmer them on the stove to release their fresh scent. Carefully flatten the cut peel, and use your scissors to shape the sections into points of a star, flower petals, or anything else you like. Thread some string through one of your sections, and then dry the peel. Spread a few layers of newspaper on a flat surface, arrange your peels on that, cover them with more newspaper, and then stack magazines or books on the top to keep the peels flat. Itll come as no surprise, though, that some languages do carry more scope in terms of employment desirability, the number of global speakers, et cetera.In order for a language learning platform to stay competitive, its important to keep up with current language learning trends and demands.In reviewing Babbels language options,  it was immediately apparent that some of the up-and-coming world languages were nowhere to be seen, such as Chinese, Arabic and Hindi (amongst others).Babbel is a Eurocentric platform, which is great if the language you want to learn falls into that category; but thats not the case for all global language learners today.Lacking in the Area of Design and TechnologyAlthough I enjoyed Babbels design and technology, and the visual aid components, I do feel theres still room for improvement.Learning a language a hundred years ago was vastly different from language learning today, and so we can safely assume that a hundred years from now, its going to be totally different too.Technology is constantly advancing, and the science behind language learning is developing too.Although Babbel has made improvements since it first began, it could be a little more up-to-date and imaginative in the area of design and technology.Missing an Eye for DetailThere are a few small but distracting issues.When introducing vocabulary, many of the courses included native pronunciations that werent as clear as they could be.Of course, users want to know what a word or phrase sounds like when its expressed naturally (after all, thats how youre going to hear it in the real world); but when learning, hearing the word or phrase spoken slowly and well-articulated is vital at first.Testing a learners understanding is necessary, but not when the target language itself is not the focus. There were exercises and features that were reminiscent of a high school language class. Too much time was focused on talking or giving explanations in the learners native language as opposed to actually spending time learning the target language.An example of this that occurred when using Babbel was an exercise where the user was asked to drag and drop English words (instead of the target language) into blank spaces to assess comprehension.So, Whats the Verdict?Overall, Babbel is a useful and inexpensive supplement for language learners. Will it help you to become fluent? No, but thats not its intention in the first place.Babbel could definitely step it up in the cons section above, particularly in terms of the languages offered.Fortunately, FluentU is a well -rounded option for nine languages, including one that isnt available through Babbel.  FluentU takes a step back from the traditional textbook approach and encourages you to learn in a more natural way. In addition to providing videos, FluentU also offers downloadable audio dialogues and transcripts to use later when youre offline. Plus, the program provides plenty of tools, which can be used to actively practice your vocabulary and grammar, like multimedia flashcards, running vocabulary lists and more.As you build your language tower, youll need multiple tools to get the job done. Congratulations! But, uggg! Then comes that sinking feeling Sure, it’s a huge step forward knowing you’ve been selected for an interview. But knowing you’re going to have to show up and perform is often enough to make most people’s stomachs do a backward flip. If this is you, you’re not alone. Going for a job interview is probably in the top five most uncomfortable things to have to do. At this point, you’ll have gone through the kinds of questions you’re going to be asked, and you will have some answers thought out in your head. You’ll also have done some research about the company you’re interviewing at. And even though this helps, it still isn’t quite enough to give you that personal edge when you get in the room. And you’re reading this because you already know that. You’re aware that people relate to people, and the way you come across in the face-to-face meeting is going to have a huge effect on whether you get hired. Your resume and qualifications have got you this far. Now it’s down to the interview. It Would Be Useful to Have the Charisma of George Clooney You see, it’s a delicate balance you face from here on out. You need to come across as confident: confident in your abilities, that you can do the job, that you’ll fit in with the culture, and confident enough that people will generally enjoy working with you. At the same time, you want to give arrogance a very wide berth. In essence, what you’re shooting for is “likeably confident,” as this will tick all the boxes without pushing the wrong buttons. And when you’re trying to balance it consciously, in addition to remembering all those good points you’ve prepared and trying to build rapport, you’re setting yourself up for cognitive overloadâ€"giving your brain so much to think about that your responses slow down and you don’t come across as natural. What’s the Alternative, Then? Well, it sounds easy, but don’t let the simplicity fool you, because the exercise I’m about to share with you flat-out brings home the bacon. If you’re ready to really rock your interview with real inner confidence, keep reading. This is where we separate the doers and achievers from the “content skimmers.” Real, inner confidence comes from internal self-esteem. It’s a place where you are really sure of yourself and happy with yourself to the point where you don’t have to artificially inflate yourself or try and put others down. This is a place where you’re comfortable to be around and people like being around you. The only way to make this show up on the outside is by building it up on the inside. Like “presence,” you either have it, or you don’tOr do you? What you’re about to learn is an exercise that will allow you to quickly make a shift in your level of self-esteem and inner confidence that will outshine any tooth whitener you’ve bought from the store especially for the interview. What we’re going to learn is how to shortcut years of personal and professional development and fast-track your outer confidence quota to a level where you realize you’re so valuable inwardly that outwardly, you’ll have them at “hello.” Your “Because I’m Worth It Map Take out a fresh piece of paper, and in the center, write down the words “reasons why I should get my dream job” and draw a bubble around it (like in the diagram below). For added motivation, write down specifically what that dream job is. Next, you’re going to write down these reasons, shooting off into other bubbles which can be attached to the central bubble or to each other as your brain sees fit. You’re aiming to write down 200 reasons. (That’s right, 200. You’ll see why in a moment.) Keep your reasons shortâ€"you want to get as many on the page as possible. And to get to the 200, go through all the different areas of your life, past and present. Look at everything, even if it’s a tenuous reason. We’re trying to drill into your psyche the feeling that you are deserving. Eventually (somewhere between reasons 150 and 190), it just throws its hands up and says “Yes, I’m worth it!” and you feel a shift where those old thoughts of self-doubt and worry are overridden by your new sense of confidence. So get as detailed as you canâ€" you’re looking for as many reasons as possible to drill the notion into your mind that you actually do deserve to have whatever it is you’ve put in your center circle. The example below is what it should look like in the beginning, but you’re looking to build it up to 200 reasons, so you’re probably going to need another sheet of paper.
